Makar Sankranti , also known as Uttarayana a Hindu festival and is observed to mark a new begining. This festival is known by various names like Bihu in Assam, Pongal in Tamil Nadu ,Uttarayan in Gujarat ,Makar Sankranti in Maharashtra etc.
This festival is observed with festivities like kite flying and bonfires and feasts.
Puran Poli is a popular sweet dish of Maharashtra prepared by many during festivals. Chana dal{split Bengal gram} is soaked for few hours then boiled and then cooked in jaggery and cardamom powder .This filling is stuffed into the prepared dough and rolled out. Cooked on a pan and brushed generously with clarified butter/ ghee.
You can always replace the channa dal with Yellow Moong dal.
Ingredients for the filling 2 cups channa dal 1 and 1/4 cup jaggery 2 tsp cardamom powder Few strands of Kesar 2 tbsp ghee Total polis 12
METHOD Wash and Soak the channa dal for 4 to 6 hours. Boil the channa dal till done. Add 2 tbsp ghee.once the ghee is hot add the channa dal ,jaggery and cardamom powder. Mix well and keep stirring till jaggery melts completely and mixes well with the channa dal. Allow to cool.
FOR THE CHAPATIS 350 to 400 gms wheat flour 2 tbsp Melted ghee and another 1 tbsp melted ghee. 1 tsp Kesar dissolved in 1/2 cup lukewarm water. Salt to taste
Knead the wheat flour to a soft dough adding the 2 tbs meltedghee,salt,kesar (saffron)and enough water . Then add the remaining 1 tbsp melted ghee and knead. Place in a bowl and cover with a damp muslin cloth. Divide into equal size balls. Fill these balls with the channa dal filling. Seal well. Roll the dough to a round shape. Heat up a pan and roast these chapatis well. Lastly brushing with melted ghee.
