Dal fry

For the dal fry ,used tuvar dal also known as pigeon pea. The dal / lentils are soaked for an hour,then washed well, boiled with just enough water cooking till done and not over cooking it.

Onions, garlic, tomatoes and a few spices are used to prepare this dal fry

Goes really well with naans , chapatis or a simple pulao.


200 gms Tuvar dal/ pigeon pea lentil

Soak dal for at least an hour, wash well.

Then boil the dal till done.

2 tbsp ghee/clarified butter

2 dried kashmiri chillies,break these chillies into half

4 green chillies finely chopped

1 tomato sliced

1 onion sliced

1 tbsp dried kasuri methi/ dry Fenugreek leaves

6 cloves of garlic finely chopped

1/2 tsp mustard seeds

1/2 tsp cumin seeds

1 vegetarian stock cube

1/4 cup finely chopped coriander leaves

1/2 tsp turmeric powder


Heat up 2 tbsp ghee/clarified butter.

Once hot add the red kashmiri chillies, mustard seeds and cumin seeds.

Once it starts to splutter add the finely chopped cloves of garlic and saute till lightly browned.

Then next add the finely chopped green chillies saute .

Add in the sliced onions and saute till lightly browned, mix in the sliced tomatoes saute .

Add now the Vegetarian stock cube, kasuri methi, turmeric powder.

Stir fry well , add the cooked dal and mix well.

Lastly add finely chopped coriander leaves
