Chana Doce

A very famous and most loved Goan sweet. This is a soft version .


250 gms Chana dal

300 gms desiccated coconut

400 ml coconut milk

1 tsp Cardamom powder

1 tbsp ghee

450 gms Sugar

100 gms cashew nut powdered (optional)

Yellow gel colour


Wash the chana dal well. Soak previous night and keep.

Next morning boil the chana dal till done. Allow to cool.

Grind the 300 gms desiccated coconut in 400 ml coconut milk and add to a thick bottom vessel.

Grind the channa dal to a paste adding little of the reserved boiled chana water.

Add this chana paste to the ground coconut.

Powder the sugar and mix with the chana and coconut mixture. Mix well and place on medium heat. Keep stirring .When it starts to thicken Add the cardamom powder, drop of yellow gel colour and 1 tbsp ghee.Add the powdered cashew nuts (optional)

Keep stirring till it starts to leave the sides. Stir continuously till it all comes together and has left the sides of the vessel.

Grease a thali well or baking tray.

Add this paste on to the thali brush the spatula with ghee and start evening out the doce mixture well. After20 mins make cuts and let it rest for at least 8 to10 hrs.

Cut according to desired shapes and then refrigerate

Note Adding cashew nut powder to the doce makes it soft but still well formed. So it's optional.
