Akka Massor / brown lentils is a comforting and nutritious dish that combines the lovely flavour of brown lentils and a blend of mixed herbs and spices creating a satisfying and wholesome meal.
Ingredients
For the Lentils
250 grams of brown lentils (akka Massor)
Water (enough to cover the lentils)
Method:
1. Soak the brown lentils for an hour, then wash well.
2. Add just enough water to cover the lentils and bring to a boil.
3. Cook until the lentils are done to your liking.
For the Curry
2 onions, finely chopped
2 tomatoes, finely chopped
2 Kashmiri chilies
1/2 cup of mixed herbs (coriander leaves, dill leaves, and mint leaves), chopped
Salt to taste
1/4 cup of mixed herbs for garnish
2 teaspoons of ginger-garlic paste
Spice Powders:
1 and 1/2 teaspoons of chili powder
1 teaspoon of coriander powder
1/2 teaspoon of pepper powder
1/2 teaspoon of cumin powder
1/4 teaspoon of turmeric powder
Method
Step 1
Heat oil in a vessel. Sauté the dry Kashmiri chilies lightly. Add the finely chopped onions . Sauté until the onions turn lightly brown. Add the finely chopped tomatoes , salt to taste and cook until they turn soft.
Step 2
Add the ginger-garlic paste and the prepared spice powders. Pour in 2 cups of water and allow the mixture to cook for a minute on medium flame.
Step 3.
Add 1/2 cup of mixed herbs (coriander leaves, mint leaves, and dill leaves). Mix thoroughly and cook for another minute.
Step 4
Add the cooked brown lentils (akka Massor) to the curry. Cook for 5 minutes on medium flame. If required, add salt.
Step 5
Finally, add the 1/4 cup of mixed herbs for garnish .
