East Indian Frithad chicken Curry

Here is a Frithad curry with Chicken.

This Frithad masala is made without coconut.



3 or 4 kashmiri chillies ( depending on ones taste and the size of the kashmiri chillies. I had small size ones so went for 4 kashmiri chillies)

1 tbsp coriander seeds

1 Tsp cumin seeds

1 Tsp pepper seeds

1/4 Tsp poopy seeds

1/4 Tsp sesame seeds

1 inch cinnamon

2 cardamom

4 cloves

Small ball of Tamarind

1 big onion sliced


Dry roast all the spices, once done add little oil to the same pan and fry the onions till lightly browned. Allow to cool


5 small cloves of garlic

1/4 tsp Turmeric powder

Grind the roasted spices, fried onions, cloves of garlic, turmeric powder together with just enough water.


700 gms Chicken pieces

1 tomato finely chopped

2 onions medium size finely chopped

1 or 2 green chilli slit , remove seeds depending on one's taste

2 potatoes chopped

1/4 cup finely chopped coriander leaves


Marinate the chicken with salt and turmeric powder.

Add oil to the vessel, once hot add the onions and fry till lightly browned.

Then add the tomatoes and cook till soft. Adding a little bit of salt and keeping covered helps the tomatoes to soften well with occasionally sauteing on medium flame.

Once the tomatoes are soft add the ground masala and 1 cup water, let it come to a boil.

Then add the potatoes ,cook for 2 mins on medium flame, next add the chicken pieces and mix well.

Add 1 /2 cup water.. Cook till chicken and potatoes are done.

Lastly add the finely chopped coriander leaves and slit green chilli.

Cook for another 2 mins
