Simple Maharashtrian dal


140 gms Toor dal

for the godha masala

1/4 tsp nagkesar

1tbsp coriander seeds

1tsp cumin seeds

1 tsp pepper corn

1/2 tsp sesame seeds

1/2 tsp poppy seeds

1/4 tsp Fenugreek seeds

1or 2 red dried chilies

11/2 inch cinnamon stick

6 cloves

1 bay leaf

1/2 tsp turmeric powder

1/2 cup desiccated coconut

Dry roast all ingredients well. Dry roast the desiccated coconut separately. Do not roast turmeric powder.

once cool .Grind to a dry powder.

1/2 tsp jaggery

2 to 3 tbsp tamarind pulp

1 tsp cumin seeds

1/2 tsp mustard seeds

1/2 tsp asofoetida/hing

few curry leaves

1 dried red chilli

chilli powder if only required


Pressure cook the dal along with hing. Remove from the pressure cooker and whisk the dal.

To a vessel heat up some ghee ,add cumin seeds, mustard seeds, few curry leaves and 1 dried red chilli.Then add the dal .Mix in the jaggery, tamarind pulp and the prepared godha masala. Add chilli powder if needed or can opt out of it.

salt to taste. Add some amount of water. When it starts boiling add finely chopped coriander leaves.
